Politico Pro Cannabis (2/21/25): SENATE VOTE-A-NADA ON WEED

The Senate on Thursday night held a vote-a-rama on a budget plan that President Donald Trump does not actually even favor. Budget negotiations have often been a place in the past where backers of the cannabis banking bill have tried to insert it into must-pass legislation, but of the many amendments tonight that the Senate considered, the SAFER Banking Act, was not one of them.

Nearly two months into this Congress, the support of Trump and Republicans like powerful Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.) has not translated into a reintroduced bill in either chamber. Democrats, meanwhile, introduced a wide range of amendments — but did not introduce the cannabis banking bill for a vote.

While rumors swirl that the bill’s reintroduction is coming, it’s clear that cannabis is an even lower priority in this Congress, no matter how much support Trump may have given to the issue on the campaign trail.
